When you move into a new place and sign up to an energy plan with a retailer (who manages your account and bills), they’ll get in touch with us to switch on your electricity on your preferred date. It can even be on the same day if we hear by 3pm.
There’s a list of electricity retailers here and you can compare offers on the Energy Made Easy website.
If the power has been switched off for more than 12 months at your new place, we’ll need to see a Certificate of Electrical Safety before we can reconnect your supply. You can get one from any qualified electrician.
If you’re moving out and need your power switched off, no problem. Just contact your energy retailer and they’ll contact us to set up a final meter read, you’ll get a final bill and the electricity will be switched off. That can be on your preferred day – even two hours after we get the word if that’s when you need it.
Now that most Victorian households have smart meters, all of this can usually be done without anyone visiting your property.
As most Victorian households and businesses now have smart meters we can generally manage these works without visiting your property
It pretty much depends on the “point of supply”. If works have been performed, but they haven’t meant the place is supplied from a different pole, an Alteration Order is enough.
That could mean the meter has been moved to a new location, but the supply still comes from the same pole. Or let’s say a pit is installed, and that pit is still supplied by the same pole. In both those cases, an Alteration Order will do.
On the other hand, if the “point of supply” changes to another pole, you’re looking at a New Connection.
